Learning to Follow In-Context Watermark Instructions via Self-Distillation

作者Yepeng Liu, Tianyi Chen, Xuandong Zhao, Dawn Song, Yuheng Bu

展开完整摘要收起摘要

In-context watermarking (ICW) prepends an instruction to a query asking the model to embed a statistically detectable signal in its response. It thus equips LLMs with a watermarking interface that third parties can invoke without access to model internals. Its reliability hinges on the LLM following the instruction without degrading answer quality, yet how well current LLMs do so has not been measured. We introduce $\mathsf{ICWBench}$, a benchmark of three verifiable ICW instruction families, each scored on both detectability and answer quality. Evaluating 14 frontier proprietary and open-source LLMs, we find that none of the evaluated LLMs achieves both objectives across all three families. To address this, we propose a self-contained two-stage training method, requiring no distillation from a stronger model, no manual annotation, and no pre-existing ICW IF ability. The first stage, self-distillation with logits perturbation (SDLP), uses the same base LLM as both teacher and student: an instruction-equivalent decoding-time logits perturbation makes the teacher follow the ICW instruction, and the student is trained to match the teacher's output distribution. The second stage applies reinforcement learning with the automatic verifier as the reward. Applied to Qwen3-14B and GPT-OSS-20B, our method raises average TPR@$1%$FPR across three ICW instructions from $0.100$ to $0.974$ and from $0.337$ to $0.968$, respectively, while maintaining high response quality under both perplexity evaluation and LLM-as-a-Judge.

Knowledge Distillation under Teacher Misspecification: An Order-Parameter Analysis of the Gap between Teacher Mimicry and Task Performance

作者Kazuyuki Hara, Hideitsu Hino

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Knowledge distillation trains a small student model to reproduce the outputs of a large teacher model, and its progress is typically monitored through the teacher--student discrepancy. The quantity of ultimate interest, however, is the student's error with respect to the true task. We study the relation between these two objectives in a minimal three-party model, a true teacher (generative model), a teacher, and a student, all soft committee machines, in which the true teacher contains a shared latent factor that the teacher cannot represent, with mismatch strength controlled by a single scalar $\dmiss$. Within an order-parameter description of online distillation, and exploiting closed-form (arcsine-type) expressions for all errors under error-function activations, we prove that the learning dynamics and the distillation error $\Ets$ are exactly invariant to $\dmiss$, whereas the true error $\Etzs$ and the gap $Δ=\Etzs-\Ets$ are strictly increasing in $\dmiss$, with a rate that is amplified linearly by the complexity $M_0$ of the true teacher. Numerical phase diagrams over the plane spanned by true-teacher complexity and student capacity confirm the predicted deformation: the contours of $\Ets$ do not move while the landscape of $\Etzs$ rises systematically, and a teacher-miss regime, where mimicry succeeds but the task fails, expands with $\dmiss$. The results give a quantitative warning against evaluating distillation solely through teacher-mimicry metrics and identify the gap $Δ$ as a minimal diagnostic for distinguishing teacher-miss from capacity-limited failure.

Flow-JEPA: Flow Matching for Robust Latent Dynamics in JEPA World Models

作者Yanchen Huo, Ziying Song, Yadan Luo

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Joint-Embedding Predictive Architectures (JEPAs) have shown strong potential for learning compact predictive representations, and LeWorldModel (LeWM) extends this paradigm to reconstruction-free latent world modeling from pixels. However, its deterministic autoregressive predictor generates future states through repeated one-step transitions, which can accumulate errors and remain sensitive to task-irrelevant visual perturbations. In this work, we propose Flow-JEPA (F-JEPA), a conditional flow matching dynamics model that jointly generates a sequence of future latent states conditioned on the current observation and actions. A Gaussian distribution serves as the flow source, exposing the vector field to perturbed latent trajectories as it learns to transport them toward clean future representations. This formulation retains the reconstruction-free JEPA framework while replacing point-wise transition regression with stochastic trajectory-level prediction. F-JEPA raises mean success from $86%$ to $92%$ under clean observations and from $67%$ to $86%$ under noisy conditions, suggesting that conditional flow matching provides a promising alternative to deterministic autoregressive dynamics in JEPA world models.

The information geometry of product-reference discrete diffusion: Interaction growth complexity and optimal scheduling

作者Martin J. Wainwright

展开完整摘要收起摘要

We study a class of product-reference diffusion algorithms for sampling from a discrete distribution. We show that their sampling performance can be characterized using a path-based measure of data geometry that we call the interaction growth complexity (IGC). We show that a bivariate IGC kernel gives an exact representation of both the KL discretization error and a simple one-step upper bound. The simpler univariate IGC density can be used to study the effect of stepsize choices on the iteration complexity required to obtain $ε$-accurate samples in KL divergence. Samplers that traverse the path with equi-spaced steps in log-squared-reliability-odds have performance that depends on the aggregate IGC mass, whereas refined choices of stepsizes have a lower complexity depending on a square-root functional. In the fine-grid limit, both of these characterizations become sharp. We also allow general product reference distributions and show that the reference law can substantially reshape the IGC profile and the resulting sampling complexity; in particular, references far from both the uniform and the data marginals can yield dimension-dependent improvements. Finally, the aggregate IGC mass admits bounds in terms of total correlation and dual total correlation, thereby connecting the pathwise geometry to classical measures of multivariate dependence.

Patch-Based Diffusion Reconstruction for Accelerated Cardiac Cine

作者Xuan Lei, Philip Schniter, Juliet Varghese, Rizwan Ahmad

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Purpose: To develop and evaluate a diffusion-based reconstruction framework for highly accelerated 2D real-time (RT) cine cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). Methods: We trained an unconditional patch-based diffusion model and incorporated it into a reconstruction framework, termed CineDiff, using diffusion posterior sampling for data consistency. CineDiff was evaluated in four settings: (i) 30 retrospectively undersampled breath-held cine at 1.5T and 3T from healthy participants across multiple acceleration rates, (ii) 15 prospectively undersampled free-breathing RT cine at 1.5T and 3T from patients indicated for clinical CMR, and (iii) 10 prospectively undersampled mid-field (0.55T) free-breathing scans, including five from healthy subjects and five from porcine models. For retrospective undersampling, reconstruction quality was assessed using peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS), and deep image structure and texture similarity (DISTS). For prospective undersampling, image quality was evaluated by blinded expert scoring on a 5-point Likert scale. Results: In retrospectively undersampled breath-held cine data, CineDiff achieved higher PSNR and SSIM and lower LPIPS and DISTS than the comparison methods across all evaluated acceleration rates. In prospectively undersampled free-breathing RT cine data, CineDiff received higher expert image-quality scores. Qualitatively, CineDiff reduced block-like artifacts and preserved finer anatomical detail compared with traditional compressed sensing and a variational network method, termed CineVN. Conclusion: CineDiff enabled high-quality reconstruction of highly accelerated 2D RT cine CMR. The method also demonstrated robustness to out-of-distribution data, including mid-field and porcine acquisitions.

Efficient JPEG Restoration in the Wavelet Domain via Mean Flows

作者Stefan-Alexandru Asandei, Mihai-Alexandru Radu

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Latest JPEG restoration systems achieve strong quality with large models, yet often remain too slow and expensive for efficient on-device deployment. We present a 65M-parameter generative restorer that attains the lowest LPIPS at QF 10 and 20 on LIVE-1, Urban100, and DIV2K-val while sustaining 8.05 images/s at $1024\times1024$ on a single RTX 3090, roughly $4.9\times$ the reported throughput of one-step SODiff at one-twentieth of its parameters. Trained from scratch, the model replaces the learned VAE encoder-decoder with an exactly invertible two-level Haar transform, predicts a clean wavelet-domain residual through a rank-enhanced linear-attention DiT that estimates compression severity internally, and is optimized with an improved MeanFlow objective that enables inference in one or two network evaluations without distillation. Large pretrained priors remain stronger under severe compression (QF 5), whereas our model prioritizes throughput for deployment-constrained restoration.

Pro-Router: Token-Aware Progressive Model Routing with Adaptive Edge-Cloud Collaboration for Efficient Multimodal LLM Inference

作者Xinyuan Gui, Shaowen Wang, Sheng Sun, Zijian Wang, Zishu Yu, Zheming Yang

展开完整摘要收起摘要

The remarkable performance of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) comes at the cost of substantial computational overhead, posing significant challenges to real-time deployment and cost effectiveness. Existing model routing approaches either decide from coarse request-level features alone or spend one or several extra language model passes to inspect the generated response, leaving the token-level uncertainty signals that emerge during generation unused. To address these limitations, we propose Pro-Router, a token-aware progressive model routing method with adaptive edge-cloud collaboration for efficient multimodal LLM inference. Pro-Router employs a two-stage progressive decision mechanism. First, a lightweight prompt pre-scorer module performs rapid pre-screening before token generation begins, guiding apparently simple requests to small models. Second, a token-aware verifier reads the sampling probability distribution of each token the small model generates, estimating the model's confidence in its own output to determine, per request, whether the answer ships or escalates to the cloud-based high-precision model. Furthermore, we design an adaptive edge-cloud serving pipeline that sizes every dispatch to each device's measured service rate, so both the edge and the cloud tiers stay fully utilized without manual parameter tuning and are not impacted by the network latency. Extensive experiments on multiple multimodal benchmark datasets and models demonstrate the effectiveness of Pro-Router. Compared to other methods, it achieves the highest routing accuracy and improves routing speed by more than 10x. Its serving pipeline also reaches more than 75% higher end-to-end throughput than the existing model routing pipeline. Our code is available at https://github.com/xinyuangui2/pro-router.

When Teacher Guidance Misleads: Reward-Aligned On-Policy Distillation

作者Siyuan Gan, Yuhan Li, Xiran Wang, Linjian Meng, Boyan Wang, Zhen Zhao, Jing Huo, Yang Gao

展开完整摘要收起摘要

On-policy distillation (OPD) has recently emerged as a popular post-training paradigm for large language models (LLMs), providing an efficient way to transfer the knowledge and capabilities of teacher models into student models. However, teacher guidance on student-generated prefixes is not always reliable. Training should optimize the model to generate responses that are more likely to be correct, or equivalently, to get higher outcome rewards. But during OPD, the teacher model may provide guidance that discourages the student from moving toward correct trajectories or moves the student toward incorrect ones, which is misaligned with outcome reward. Such misaligned guidance is unreliable, as it would mislead the optimization process and ultimately degrade model performance. To mitigate misaligned teacher guidance, we propose Reward-Aligned On-Policy Distillation (RA-OPD). The key insight is to keep only trajectories whose induced updates move the student toward correct trajectories or discourage the student from moving toward incorrect ones. Specifically, for each sampled trajectory, RA-OPD checks whether its trajectory-level distillation return is consistent with its outcome reward and then filters out the misaligned trajectories. RA-OPD selects more reliable trajectories to improve student model performance without requiring additional computational cost. We evaluate RA-OPD on math and code benchmarks using models from the Qwen3 family and the DeepSeek-R1 family. Across seven math benchmarks and three code benchmarks, RA-OPD significantly outperforms standard OPD and other tested OPD variants.

SpikeOPD: Stable On-Policy Distillation for Autoregressive Spiking Language Models

作者Enqiao Lu, Xingrui Yu, Yiwei Fu, Zhenglin Wan, Pengfei Zhou, Wangbo Zhao, Muqing Jian, Xueyi Zhang, Yang You, Ivor Tsang

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) offer a path to energy-efficient language modeling through sparse encoding and event-driven computation, but training capable spiking language models from scratch remains difficult. A practical alternative is ANN-to-SNN migration through knowledge distillation (KD), where a pretrained artificial neural network (ANN) teacher supervises an SNN student. Existing migration approaches distill on fixed corpus prefixes, whereas autoregressive inference conditions on self-generated prefixes, creating prefix-source mismatch. It manifests as output-policy mismatch with the ANN teacher and internal spiking-dynamics drift between self-generated and matched corpus prefixes. On-policy distillation (OPD) offers a natural way to mitigate both manifestations by continuing teacher supervision on self-generated prefixes. We evaluate a teacher-only full-KL variant, Vanilla OPD, via a controlled stress test and observe it may suffer from delayed rollout-feedback collapse. This result shows that on-policy coverage alone does not ensure stable adaptation. Motivated by these findings, we propose SpikeOPD, a stable on-policy distillation framework for autoregressive SNNs that learns from self-generated prefixes while maintaining rollout stability. It applies full-KL teacher correction to reduce output-policy mismatch, while matched-prefix policy anchoring constrains policy departure from the frozen reference SNN on the same prefixes. Layerwise spike regularization further limits firing-rate deviations during on-policy adaptation. Across three model scales, SpikeOPD improves average accuracy over the corresponding KD SNNs by 0.8, 1.7, and 2.9 points at 0.125B, 0.35B, and 1.3B, respectively, while preserving their sparse-compute profiles.

Dual-Stream Semantic Guidance with Prototype Anchor Calibration for Source-Fully-Free Adaptation of Vision-Language Models

作者Weiwei Xiang, Shun Peng, Guangyi Xiao, Hao Chen, Lei Yang

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Source-Fully-Free Domain Adaptation (SFF-DA) has emerged as a strategic paradigm to adapt Vision-Language Models (VLMs) without any access to source data or task-specific source models. However, we identify a critical Dual Semantic Drift that hinders this process: static drift arising from the rigidity of fixed class embeddings, and dynamic drift stemming from the divergence of generated captions, causing severe semantic misalignment that intensifies the stability-plasticity dilemma. To address this, we propose DSSG (Dual-Stream Semantic Guidance), an end-to-end framework that reconciles fine-grained plasticity with global stability. Our core contribution is the Dual Semantic Guidance (DSG) module, which integrates a caption stream for domain-specific knowledge with a class-anchor stream to anchor global categorical consistency. Furthermore, a Dynamic Cross-Modal Knowledge Distillation (CMKD) module is introduced to leverage the evolving teacher distribution for calibrating teacher-student consistency. Building upon DSSG, we further introduce Prototype Anchor Calibration (PAC), yielding DSSG-PAC, which periodically calibrates prototype anchors and caches them until the next calibration. This design reduces redundant text-side computation while preserving the adaptability of class guidance to the evolving text space. We further establish SFF-DA risk bounds that relate student risk to semantic-teacher quality and teacher--student discrepancy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DSSG consistently outperforms current state-of-the-art methods across multiple benchmarks, while DSSG-PAC largely preserves its adaptation performance with 18.9% lower total adaptation time. Token-Budget Distillation: Transferring Full-Token Semantics to Compressed Video Vision-Language Models

作者Xiaoyang Guo, Guoping Luo, Jusheng Zhang, Keze Wang, Wenhao Wang

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Adapting video vision-language models (VLMs) is computationally expensive because video inputs produce a large number of visual tokens, making both fine-tuning and inference costly. Although visual token compression can reduce this overhead, direct adaptation on compressed inputs often causes semantic drift and noticeable performance degradation. We present Token-Budget Distillation (TBD), a parameter-efficient fine-tuning framework for adapting video VLMs under a fixed token budget. TBD freezes the pretrained backbone, updates only LoRA adapters, and integrates FlashVID-based visual token compression into the video pathway. To preserve full-token semantics under compression, TBD employs a dual-path teacher-student design, where a full-token teacher provides stable supervision and a compressed student is optimized with task loss, answer-region KL distillation, GT-anchored margin distillation, and reliability-aware KD control. This design enables the student to recover the semantic behavior of the full-token model while remaining efficient under aggressive token reduction. We evaluate TBD on three video VLM backbones, including LLaVA-Video, LLaVA-OneVision, and Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct, across four video understanding benchmarks. TBD consistently outperforms compression-only baselines under both moderate and aggressive compression. On LLaVA-Video at retention ratio R = 10 percent, TBD preserves 97.0 percent of the Vanilla model's average accuracy; on LLaVA-OneVision at R = 10 percent, it achieves an average score of 58.4 and matches 100.0 percent relative accuracy.

VISTA: Verifier-Informed Student-to-Teacher Adaptation for On-Policy Self-Distillation

作者Zewen Ding, Zezhong Wu, Zhou Tao, Shida Wang, Shizhuo Hou, YongXiang Hua, Haoyu Cao, Linli Xu

展开完整摘要收起摘要

On-policy self-distillation (OPSD) improves reasoning by training a problem-only student on its own rollouts using dense token-level supervision from a privileged teacher that also sees a reference solution. However, standard OPSD treats the teacher distribution as a fixed target along the student's rollout and updates only the student %, although — even though privileged conditioning does not guarantee that the teacher always provides the most appropriate target for problem-only reasoning. This one-way supervision can therefore misdirect the student when the teacher distribution is misaligned with valid student reasoning. We therefore introduce Verifier-Informed Student-to-Teacher Adaptation (VISTA), which preserves the standard OPSD student update while using outcome-verified rollouts to adapt the teacher toward the student distribution. Within each verified rollout, VISTA further restricts this adaptation to the top-$k$ positions with the largest teacher--student KL divergence. Notably, VISTA reuses the rollout and loss function from standard OPSD, introducing no additional sampling or separate reward objective. Across AIME24, AIME25, and HMMT25 with Qwen3 models at 1.7B, 4B, and 8B, VISTA achieves the highest Avg@12 at every scale, improving over OPSD by $0.6$, $0.7$, and $2.1$ points, respectively. These results demonstrate the value of student supervision from outcome-verified rollouts and highlight student-to-teacher adaptation as a promising direction for OPSD.

Below the Noise Floor: Bimodal Seed Collapse and Distinct Failure Modes in Small-Model Knowledge Distillation

作者Dipto Sumit, Sakib Ul Haque, Farig Sadeque

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Function routing — selecting the correct API call from a fixed catalog given a natural-language request — is a deployment problem where small students are attractive but knowledge distillation gains are typically reported single-seed, at scales where seed variance is unknown. On a 740-instance healthcare API routing task with a 1.5B Qwen student and a 20B teacher, we compare eight KD variants against supervised cross-entropy, using three to six seeds for key configurations. We find: (i) per-seed standard deviation ranges from 2.8 to 48.7 percentage points, swallowing every claimed KD gain below five points; (ii) three of seven KD variants exhibit bimodal collapse, with at least one in three to five seeds falling below 55% accuracy while the others train normally, and a fourth showing elevated variance; (iii) collapse has distinct modes — wrong-function selection for ce_kd and ce_paraphrase, and a previously undocumented output-truncation mode for reasoning_kd, where the model emits reasoning but terminates before producing a function name (0.9% accuracy); (iv) only progressive_kd and rank_kd avoid collapse across observed seeds, with sigma <= 3.9 pp; (v) a naive cross-split +3.78 pp gain from input enrichment reverses to -2.70 pp under controlled within-split multi-seed re-testing. Single-seed evaluation is therefore unable to detect central failure modes in small-model KD.

Diffusion Distillation for Efficient Weather Ensembles

Diffusion models generate skillful weather ensembles but require costly iterative sampling. We introduce a supervised energy-distance distillation method that compresses a multi-step diffusion teacher into a single-step student by aligning student forecasts with teacher samples and ground-truth observations. Experiments on global forecasting and typhoon-track prediction show that our student outperforms existing distillation methods and preserves skill for extreme events. It matches or surpasses the teacher across key metrics using only one neural function evaluation per autoregressive step.

FOCUS & RePAIR: Mitigating Text Degeneration via Token-Level Guidance for Pruned Large Language Models

作者Junyoung Lee, Sehyeon Park, Shinhyoung Jang, Seonha Ryu, Hojeong Kim, Hyunsei Lee, Il Hong Suh, Yeseong Kim

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Pruning is a practical approach to compress large language models (LLMs), but it can amplify text degeneration, especially repetition loops, even when perplexity and task accuracy remain largely unchanged. In this work, we present a token-level analysis of this failure mode by viewing decoding as a dynamical process that enters and persists in a small set of recurrent contexts. Our analysis decomposes degeneration into loop entry risk and loop persistence, and shows that persistence is controlled by the escape mass assigned to plausible alternatives within the token sampling set. Motivated by these findings, we propose two token-level guidance objectives for post-pruning fine-tuning. FOCUS reweights distillation toward high-confidence teacher regions to suppress leakage, while RePAIR uses onset-centered positive/negative continuation pairs with a margin loss to promote plausible alternatives and prevent early commitment to repetition loops. Experiments on open-ended continuation and instruction-based generation show that both methods consistently reduce repetition and improve generation quality.

Reason in the Words You Speak: Idiolectal Paraphrasing Off-Policy Traces for Reasoning Distillation in VideoLLMs

作者Ji Soo Lee, Jinyoung Park, Seohyun Lee, Jongha Kim, Joonmyung Choi, Jinsung Yoon, Hyunwoo J. Kim

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Recent large language models achieve strong performance on complex reasoning tasks, where reinforcement learning with Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) has emerged as a leading paradigm for optimizing models on self-generated trajectories. However, the on-policy nature of GRPO bounds the model to the reasoning skills it can already produce, restricting to learn more advanced capabilities. Prior works inject privileged reasoning traces from a stronger teacher policy to guide training, yet these traces are inherently out of distribution with respect to the student policy. We observe that this mismatch between on-policy and off-policy causes gradient clipping on semantically critical reasoning tokens, ultimately rewarding correct answers while leaving the reasoning that justifies them unlearned. Hence, we propose Echo-GRPO, a framework that lets the model reason in the words it speaks. Rather than imitating low-probability privileged traces from the teacher model, Echo-GRPO rewrites them into the student policy's own idiolect, that is, its own characteristic vocabulary and expression patterns, while preserving their semantics via Dual-Reference Decoding. We instantiate this framework as VideoEcho-R1 for video reasoning distillation, achieving consistent improvements across three multimodal LLM backbones and five benchmarks. Finally, we show that our idiolectal paraphrasing is a plug-in module that consistently improves both RL and supervised fine-tuning frameworks for reasoning distillation, demonstrating that policy-aligned supervision extends beyond GRPO.

Scaling Model-Generated Distillation Data Can Make Latent Teacher Traits More Recoverable

作者Zhichen Dong, Zhixuan Liu, Yuyu Fan, Xiangtian Li, Shuyang Zhang, Chao Yang

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Scaling model-generated data is usually viewed as improving distillation: more examples should increase coverage, reduce noise, and produce stronger students. We show a second effect: larger datasets can make subtle teacher-specific signals easier to detect in the trained student, even when examples are off-task and never mention the trait. In a controlled setup inspired by subliminal learning, a teacher induced to express a target trait generates restricted off-task data, such as number-only completions. Students trained on different amounts of independent off-task data are evaluated in a separate domain, with matched no-trait controls isolating target-specific transfer. Our main finding is that larger independent datasets make the teacher's induced trait stand out more clearly in the student's later behavior. Other plausible traits may also strengthen with scale, but the target usually grows more. When the small-scale student already favors the target, scaling mainly amplifies that behavior; when it favors a related or salient alternative, more data can shift behavior toward the intended trait. Analyses of learned LoRA updates show a parallel trend. These effects appear across model families, trait types, multi-trait settings, and cross-model transfer. Our results suggest that scaling generated distillation data should be paired with trait-aware curation and evaluation, even when the data appears off-task or benign.

Video-OPSD: Exploiting Privileged Visual Evidence for On-Policy Self-Distillation in Video Large Language Models

作者Ziyue Wang, Shiqi Huang, Weiwen Xu, Bihan Wen, Xudong Jiang

展开完整摘要收起摘要

On-policy self-distillation (OPSD) has recently emerged as an effective post-training paradigm that improves policy optimization through dense token-level supervision from a privileged self-teacher. Despite its promise, OPSD remains largely underexplored for Video Large Language Models (Video-LLMs). Existing methods typically construct privileged teachers by augmenting their context with additional information while keeping the primary input unchanged for both teacher and student. Video reasoning, however, offers a distinct source of privileged supervision within the primary input itself: long videos contain substantial temporal redundancy, and only a small subset of frames provides the evidence necessary to answer a question. Building on this observation, we present $Video-OPSD$, an OPSD framework that exploits privileged visual evidence for both self-teacher construction and knowledge transfer. First, our Evidence-Grounded Self-Teacher conditions the teacher exclusively on annotated evidence frames while the student continues to reason over the complete video. This focused visual input enables the teacher to provide more informative supervision. Second, our Evidence-Guided Token Optimization adaptively weights token-level distillation according to each reasoning token's reliance on privileged visual evidence, thereby emphasizing perceptually grounded reasoning. Experiments across video understanding and reasoning benchmarks show that $Video-OPSD$ consistently improves upon Standard OPSD across multiple backbones and achieves performance comparable to GRPO while requiring substantially less training time, establishing an effective and efficient post-training approach for Video-LLMs.

SPEAR: Distilling Domain-Adaptive Reasoning Skeletons via Sequential Symbolic Alignment in Reinforcement Learning

作者Zhuochun Li, Yuelyu Ji, Yiming Zeng, Daqing He

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Reinforcement learning-based knowledge distillation has the potential to transfer complex reasoning from teacher to student models, yet it currently faces a critical dilemma: researchers must choose between sparse outcome-based rewards, which provide insufficient logical guidance, or expensive neural Process Reward Models (PRMs) for dense signals. We resolve this by introducing SPEAR (Symbolic Process Evaluation and Alignment Reward), a training-free and plug-and-play process reward method for sequence-level on-policy distillation. SPEAR projects natural-language reasoning traces into domain-adaptive symbolic milestones, providing an efficient proxy for process-level reasoning alignment. By utilizing the longest common subsequence (LCS) to align student explorations with teacher milestones, SPEAR provides a dense, order-aware reward signal that enforces logical consistency without the need for an external neural verifier. Our experiments across math, science, and commonsense reasoning tasks demonstrate that SPEAR effectively bridges the reasoning gap between student and teacher models via sequence-level distillation with efficient dense process rewards. Generative Semantic Scene Completion

作者Shi Chen, Weifeng Ge

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Outdoor LiDAR semantic scene completion (SSC) recovers a dense semantic voxel grid from a scan observing 1% of the target volume, under class imbalance beyond 7,000x. We recast SSC as generative semantic scene completion (GSSC): a single discrete-diffusion formulation in three roles. First, paired sparse-dense scene synthesis (PS$^3$) generates matched sparse LiDAR observations with their dense semantic completions, addressing the long tail at its source and yielding the PS$^3$-SemanticKITTI corpus we train on alongside SemanticKITTI. Second, semantic-guided generative scene completion (SGSC) generates the scene from noise with multinomial discrete diffusion, conditioned on the sparse scan through a bird's-eye-view semantic map and a sparse 3D feature stream. Third, the same framework instead refines an existing completion in one flow-matching step: structured source discrete diffusion (S$^2$D$^2$). S$^2$D$^2$ improves the mIoU of SGSC's own output and every external SSC base tested, without base retraining or test-time adaptation. On the strongest base, one step without test-time augmentation reaches 38.8% mIoU on the SemanticKITTI hidden test. To our knowledge that is the best causal, single-sweep, single-sample result on that leaderboard, +2.1 pp over the previous best published score under the same restriction. Four correction steps with eight-view test-time augmentation reach 39.2%, outside that restriction.

Simple Actors and Deep Critics for Scalable Reinforcement Learning

作者Guhyeon Kang, Jaehwi Lee, Minhae Kwon

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Recent progress in offline reinforcement learning (RL) has been driven by expressive generative actors such as diffusion and flow-matching policies, which capture multimodal behavior in offline datasets. However, these actors require multiple denoising or integration steps per action and thus incur substantial overhead at every decision in deployment. In this work, we revisit where capacity should be invested in an offline actor--critic method. Since the critic is used only during training and is discarded at deployment while the actor runs at every decision step, allocating capacity to the critic rather than the actor is more favorable for inference-time efficiency. However, scaling MLP critics in offline RL is known to introduce several distinct instabilities that have, in practice, kept critics shallow. We identify three distinct failure modes that arise when critics are deepened in offline RL---optimization, bootstrap-noise amplification, and value-range drift---and address each with a corresponding ingredient: a residual MLP backbone, n-step bootstrap targets, and a categorical cross-entropy loss. Combining these ingredients with a lightweight deterministic actor, we propose LAC (Light Actor, deep Critic). On OGBench, LAC matches the strongest diffusion- and flow-matching baselines while achieving up to 4x lower inference latency, comparable to one-step distilled policies without distillation. Its critic recipe also transfers across actor parametrizations.

Zero-Shot Video Restoration and Enhancement with Text-to-Image Latent Diffusion Models and Multi-Modal References

作者Cong Cao, Huanjing Yue, Xin Liu, Jingyu Yang

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Zero-shot image restoration methods with text-to-image latent diffusion models have achieved great success in universal image restoration tasks without training. However, applying them to video restoration will result in severe temporal flickering. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for zero-shot video restoration and enhancement which uses a text-to-image latent diffusion model and multi-modal references. Through the proposed dual prompt tuning inversion and sampling, the inference time can be reduced to nearly 1/3 of the original. The performance and temporal consistency can be also significantly stregthened. By using the proposed texture-aware video token merging, the temporal correlation between frames can be further utilized to improve the temporal consistency. We futher propose the referenced self-attention and referenced token merging to support image reference. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in restoring and enhancing temporally consistent videos.

In recent years, image-to-video (I2V) generation models have made remarkable progress in subject consistency and temporal coherence, enabling high quality video synthesis. However, these advances also introduce new safety risks. Existing studies mainly focus on jailbreak attacks involving single frame violations, while largely overlooking the temporal dimension unique to video generation models. In this paper, we investigate three attack scenarios and uncover a temporal vulnerability in I2V systems: unsafe semantics may emerge not from a single frame, but from semantic composition over time. We further identify two key challenges in such attacks: temporal abstraction and semantic camouflage. To address these issues, we propose TempJail, a novel temporal jailbreak framework for I2V systems. For temporal abstraction, we decompose a target malicious caption into an initial frame visual condition and a temporal text instruction. For semantic camouflage, on the image side we model semantic injection as controlled latent perturbation in diffusion sampling and introduce gradient guidance from pretrained encoders. On the text side, we rewrite the caption into an innocuous ``subject-action-scene'' template that bypasses safety filters while preserving temporal guidance. In the black-box inference phase, these two modalities jointly enable malicious semantics to be gradually triggered over time. Experiments on closed-source commercial models, including Kling, Seedance, Veo and PixVerse, show that TempJail improves attack success rate over prior state-of-the-art methods by 23.3% under GPT-5.2 evaluation and 22.0% under human evaluation. Preserving General Capabilities during Domain Specialization with Uncertainty-Calibrated MOPD

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Specializing large language models to vertical domains improves domain-specific behavior but often degrades general capabilities such as reasoning, coding, instruction following, and creative writing. We study this domain--general trade-off in Multi-Teacher On-Policy Distillation (MOPD), where a specialized student is supervised on its own sampled trajectories by domain and general teachers. Standard MOPD faces two limitations: ordinary on-policy sampling rarely exposes tokens with large positive teacher--student advantages, while the advantage sign alone does not establish whether the resulting update direction is reliable. We propose uncertainty-calibrated MOPD to address these limitations. Dual-temperature sampling broadens the candidate trajectory pool, and positive-advantage-density filtering selects trajectories with stronger positive learning signals. Centered log-likelihood (CLL) filtering then computes an entropy-calibrated teacher-endorsement score and probabilistically retains token updates according to direction--endorsement consistency. Experiments on role-playing and medical-domain specialization show that our method improves the general-capability average over standard MOPD by $4.73%$ and $10.84%$, respectively, while maintaining vertical-domain performance. Ablations and diagnostic analyses further confirm that the gains do not merely result from a larger rollout budget and that the proposed trajectory- and token-level mechanisms address their intended failure modes.

On-policy distillation (OPD), which leverages a pre-trained, specialized teacher model to provide dense supervisory signals, has achieved significant success in Large Language Models (LLMs) and has recently been adapted to flow matching models. However, this paradigm suffers from two major issues: First, training a separate, task-specific teacher for every new objective incurs high computational costs. Second, the discrepancy between teacher and student distributions often leads to compounding errors along the generation trajectory. In this paper, we introduce Self-OPD, a teacher-free OPD framework for flow matching models that turns the student's own self-exploration into step-wise supervision. At each timestep, Self-OPD branches the deterministic next-state prediction into $K$ stochastic SDE candidates, rolls them out with the ODE sampler, and compares their rewards against a deterministic self-reference baseline to obtain normalized advantages. The velocity field is optimized with an all-branch pull-push objective, where high-advantage branches attract the student and low-advantage branches repel it under direction-aware attenuation and SDE-variance normalization. For multi-objective alignment, Self-OPD fuses normalized scores at the reward level, avoiding direct gradient conflict. Experiments on single and mixed reward benchmarks show that Self-OPD outperforms prior RL and OPD methods without task-specific teachers.

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Diffusion-based Video Virtual Try-On (VVT) achieves high visual fidelity through bidirectional spatio-temporal modeling, but complete-clip dependence incurs prohibitive latency and computational overhead in practical continuous deployment. Naively enforcing causality disrupts pretrained bidirectional priors and substantially degrades synthesis quality. We introduce LiveVVT, a rolling streaming diffusion framework that preserves bounded bidirectional modeling within causal recurrent generation. Within a fixed-size window, LiveVVT jointly denoises multiple video chunks under bounded look-ahead, preserving local bidirectional interactions while emitting one clean chunk per iteration. Beyond the window, two complementary memories sustain long-term consistency: a bounded temporal memory propagates recent dynamics and occlusion context, whereas a persistent global appearance memory, constructed once from the target garment and a frontal try-on keyframe, anchors garment details and dressed appearance throughout the stream. We further introduce a progressive distillation framework integrating bidirectional VVT learning, teacher-trajectory regression for causal few-step adaptation, and Collaborative Matching Distillation, which couples teacher-distribution matching with rolling flow matching on real videos to align optimization with recurrent inference. Experiments on paired and unpaired long-sequence benchmarks demonstrate superior generation quality over similarly sized models, with $26\times$ lower latency and $11\times$ higher throughput, enabling high-fidelity real-time streaming VVT.

Provable Non-Acceleration of Standard Strang Splittings of Kinetic Langevin Dynamics

作者Nawaf Bou-Rabee

展开完整摘要收起摘要

The OBABO and BAOAB schemes and the other standard Strang splittings of kinetic (underdamped) Langevin dynamics are widely used Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. Under a suitable friction scaling, the underlying diffusion relaxes on a ballistic time scale, suggesting that these discretizations, suitably tuned, sample targets with condition number $κ$ in $O(\sqrtκ)$ iterations. We prove that no fixed choice of step size and friction, based only on the curvature bounds and the dimension, achieves this acceleration: total variation mixing time lower bounds for OBABO show that ballistic cold-start mixing fails uniformly over the smooth strongly convex class, and the lower bounds extend, with the same orders, to BAOAB and the other four Strang splittings. The proof transfers non-acceleration from optimization to sampling. Eliminating velocity gives an exact noisy heavy-ball recursion, and by the non-acceleration theorem of Goujaud, Taylor and Dieuleveut, for every tuning either some Gaussian target has a mode with relaxation time at least of order $κ$, or an attracting cycle exists on a smooth potential; dilating such a potential as $U_R(x)=R^2U(x/R)$ preserves its curvature bounds and produces metastability for a number of steps exponential in $R^2$, from an initial state at Wasserstein distance $O(R)$ from equilibrium. Using contraction estimates of Leimkuhler, Paulin and Whalley and a Wasserstein-to-total-variation regularization estimate, we prove a complementary upper bound of $O(κ)$ steps, up to logarithmic factors, for a fixed-parameter OBABO tuning. Hence, among fixed-parameter OBABO tunings, the optimal condition-number dependence of cold-start total variation mixing over this class is linear, up to logarithmic factors. A direct Gaussian calculation also rules out fixed-parameter acceleration for the left-endpoint exponential integrator.

VISTA: Visually Inferred Spatial ConTact Attention for Contact-Rich Manipulation

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Contact-rich manipulation requires precise interaction feedback. While vision-centric imitation learning is prevalent, external visual observations provide indirect and ambiguous cues about contact states, particularly under occlusion or subtle object--gripper interactions; dedicated tactile or force sensors can provide rich contact information but introduce additional hardware complexity, calibration requirements, and deployment costs. To bridge this gap, we propose VISTA-Policy, an imitation learning paradigm that utilizes the Visual Deformation Field (VDF), a 3D displacement representation of a compliant gripper, as high-dimensional visuo-physical feedback. The framework integrates: 1) a Physics-Aware Encoding Engine for real-time VDF decoding; 2) an Energy Aggregation Denoising Mechanism to isolate true interaction signals; and 3) a Deformation-Augmented Policy Network with incremental gripper actions for precise closed-loop correction. Extensive evaluations on Cross-Scale Object Grasping, Cap Unscrewing, and Calligraphy Writing demonstrate that VISTA-Policy outperforms the strong pure-vision baseline 3D Diffusion Policy and the tactile baseline. VISTA-Policy further demonstrates substantial out-of-distribution generalization to unseen object scales and robustness against dynamic disturbances, offering a durable and cost-effective route toward general-purpose fine-grained manipulation in unstructured environments. MoganBert-TR: A Turkish Encoder Foundation Model Trained from Scratch with a CLM-to-MLM Curriculum

作者Furkan Yilmaz, Habibe Aleyna Tasdemir, Muhammed Faruk Gozay

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Turkish encoder models have adopted modern architectures while leaving the pretraining objective fixed at masked language modelling. This paper introduces MoganBert-TR, a 149M-parameter Turkish encoder foundation model trained from scratch on a language-specifically filtered corpus, together with an embedding model derived from it (MoganBert-Embed). MoganBert-TR is trained over 237.3B tokens with a two-stage CLM-to-MLM curriculum: causal language modelling first, masked language modelling for the remainder, with the transition made inside the stable phase of a WSD schedule. In a controlled ablation under an equal step budget, this design outperforms pure MLM by 2.7-3.7x on Turkish MS MARCO retrieval; the measured mechanism is embedding geometry, where a single direction absorbs 28.1% of the variance under pure MLM against 11.9% under the curriculum. Long-context extension and learning-rate decay are then split into two branches after a shared prefix: running the final portion of decay at 1024 context improves the TrGLUE average by 0.49 +/- 0.26 points across five paired seeds (p = 0.013) and beats a model-soup alternative by 0.75 points at ~4.3% additional cost. MoganBert-TR attains 78.41 on TrGLUE, the best among the Turkish ModernBERT models compared, and 77.73 on TabiBench, where it leads two of the eight categories with the largest margin on code retrieval (+3.62 points over TabiBERT). MoganBert-Embed, produced through teacher distillation and multi-signal contrastive fine-tuning, ranks first among student models on the MTEB(Turkish) overall average with 68.30 and reaches 99.5% of its 7.57B-parameter teacher's score with a 51x smaller backbone. The accompanying 50,048-token tokenizer outperforms all compared Turkish tokenizers on compression and fertility across two independent test sets. Where to Look Matters: On-Policy Self-Distillation for Long-Video Understanding

作者Kaishen Wang, Dongdi Zhao, Yijun Liang, Dingqiang Ye, Ruibo Chen, Heng Huang, Di Fu

展开完整摘要收起摘要

Vision-language models (VLMs) have made substantial progress in long-video understanding, with standard backbone models typically answering questions from frames sampled across the full video. However, as videos become longer, the full-video context inevitably contains more question-irrelevant temporal content, which can distract the model from the evidence needed to answer a specific question. We empirically find that focusing the visual input on short annotated clue intervals containing question-relevant evidence consistently improves prediction accuracy across model scales compared with using the corresponding full videos, while requiring fewer input frames. Based on this finding, we introduce Clue-OPSD, a clue-privileged on-policy self-distillation framework for long-video understanding. During training, a full-video student learns from a self-teacher conditioned on the corresponding clue interval by aligning their next-token distributions along student-generated trajectories. Clue-OPSD thus uses clue intervals as privileged supervision without relying on ground-truth answer labels, while requiring no clue annotations or additional modules at inference time. Extensive experiments across multiple long-video understanding benchmarks and Qwen3.5 model scales demonstrate consistent improvements over the corresponding backbone models and strong performance against supervised post-training baselines.
